About Us
The Arts Chronicle is Shanghai American School’s first and only independent student-led Performing and Visual Arts Journal dedicated to exhibiting the exemplary works of students across five main areas of Arts: Music, Theatre, Dance, Film, Photography, and Fine Arts. This journal was created in November 2025 because we noticed there the arts community is often overshadowed by other events, and we wanted to bring them together.
Our Editorial Team features some of the most dedicated individuals in Performing and Visual Arts: Officers of National Art Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and Thespians Honor Society; First Chairs and Leads a part of APAC and AMIS international festival bands, choirs, and ensembles, with several members holding advanced ABRSM and ARSM music diplomas; as well as awards in the Scholastic Art & Writing Competition and other international arts competitions.

Founder and Editor in Chief
Hey guys! My name is James and I’m a rising senior and the Founder and Editor in Chief of this journal. I participate in a wide variety of arts at SAS, currently an active member of Tri-M Music Honor Society with a side passion for photography. I mainly participate as a member of Concert Band as First Chair Alto Saxophone; I also have experience in the Tenor and Baritone stemming from my experience from playing APAC Band and Jazz Band. I’ve spent the majority of my music career playing Classical Music, but I also love exploring sound through music theory, both of which have been recognized by ABRSM. Conducting has also slowly become a part of my music identity, mainly through my experience in past concerts, including pieces that are national competitions award winners like “Guilin’s Majesty”. Through this journal, I hope to be able to expand the arts community to new limits at Shanghai American School, and to inspire those who currently don’t to pursue arts in our community.

Founder and Executive Editor of Performing Arts
Hi everyone! My name is Rosalynn and I’m the co-founder and Executive Editor of the Performing Arts. Music has always been my greatest passion, and I have explored the arts through performance, composition, production, and writing. As a pianist with 10 years of experience, I hold an ARSM Diploma in Piano Performance and have developed a strong foundation in classical music. I am also a vocalist and a member of APAC Choir, where I regularly perform at school events. Beyond performance, I enjoy composing contemporary orchestral music, songwriting, and exploring music production. I recently attended Carnegie Mellon University’s Music Pre-College Program to further cultivate my composing abilities. I also enjoy writing musical and concert critiques, one of which received a Silver Key in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Through this journal, I hope to share my passion for the arts and inspire more SAS students to engage in the arts community!

Hi everyone, name is Jennifer and I'm a rising senior and the Executive Editor of Visual Arts for this journal. I spend most of my time involved in the visual arts at SAS, where I'm an officer of NAHS and Artivism, as well as an IB Visual Arts student. I've also had the opportunity to participate in APAC Art through the Kool Koor Workshop, along with a few art competitions both in and outside of school. Outside of school, I love visiting art galleries and museums whenever I can. One of my favorite ways to learn is by recreating works from artists I admire. Through this journal, I hope to give visual arts more opportunities to be seen and a space where visual artists are able to celebrate the diverse artistic talents.

Senior Editor
Hi everyone, my name is Eric and I’m currently a rising junior at SAS, serving as a Senior Editor for this journal. Artistically, my primary focus is on photography, with a focus on capturing human interaction against unique architecture, as well as those small, habitual moments that often go unnoticed. In terms of writing experience, I am no stranger to abstraction and personal expression. I have published works regarding historiography that explore how experiences are annotated differently through the lens of different people, much like the effect artists intend to have on their audience. More relevantly, I have competed liberally in philosophy writing competitions, which allowed me to interact with the axiological nature of art and aesthetics. Through this journal, though, I hope to be able to craft an enjoyable reading experience while viewing the wonderful exhibits and concerts at SAS! Please please please give this journal a read!

Senior Editor
Hi! My name is Wills, and I’m a rising junior and one of the senior journal editors. During my past time in SAS, I have been participating in the HS arts department in various ways -being in NAHS, attending the majority of all art events, and creating large amounts of artwork externally. My art doesn’t just come in brushstrokes and color; instead, I convert them into personal narratives. For instance, I won personal narrative awards from Scholastic. I’ve also taken my artistic journey beyond the school semester; during this summer break, I have been studying at the Rhode Island School of Design to polish my artistic skills. By participating in this journal, I wish that the school’s art community can thrive, bond, and inspire.

Senior Design Editor
Hi, my name is Mia, the Senior Design Editor of this Journal. I see myself as an active member of the school’s art community and will be serving as the President of the National Art Honor Society in the coming year. I have both participated in and coordinated events such as the art festival and various exhibitions. My design experience includes creating the brochure for the ART021 exhibition and the art magazine which featured work from students across nine international schools. I hope to celebrate the works and the creative vision of Shanghai American School students through this journal.

Hi, I’m Valentina. As a Senior Design Editor, I am passionate about using art as a means of creativity, advocacy, and community engagement. Outside of the journal, I serve as an AC Design Member, an officer of Artivism, and a member of NAHS. I am also the founder of Creative Outreach, an initiative that uses art to support cancer patients. Through these experiences, I hope to create meaningful work that inspires connection and positive impact.

Music Director
Hi, I'm Freddy, currently a rising senior, and I currently serve as one of the music directors for the journal. I am a 13-year pianist and a 6 year vocalist and have sung at honor choir festivals across APAC and AMIS, serving as Bass 1 and Bass 2, respectively, while representing the Bass and Tenor Section Leader at APAC. I also participate as a keyboardist in a house band known as "Cloud9". With my music on stage, I hope to inspire future performers and embody the melodic nature of performing arts at SAS.

Hi there, my name is Christina and I'm a rising junior. A violinist since elementary school, I have cultivated a deep passion for music that has shaped my high school journey. I have performed as concertmaster and have had the privilege of attending both AMIS and APAC Orchestra, experiences that have challenged me to grow as both a musician and a student. Beyond these larger ensembles, I regularly perform at school events, where I enjoy connecting with my peers through music. Looking ahead, I am honored to be serving as a Music Director of this journal and Vice-President of Tri-M Music Honor Society this coming school year, where I hope to give back to the community that has inspired me so much.

Dance Director
Hi I’m Jalynne and I am a rising junior! As the dance director for this year’s Arts Journal, I’m so excited to share the energy and creativity of our school’s dance community. I’ve been dancing for 4 years, training in hip-hop, jazz, and street dance, but always exploring new styles. I’m also the cheer captain, a member of the Street Dance Troupe, and part of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA). Outside of dance, you’ll probably find me with friends (I love being around people), vlogging with one of my many cameras, or going on long walks. Be sure to look out for the amazing moments from our dance community through this journal!

Theatre Director
Hi, I'm Hannah. I am currently the Vice President of the Thespians Honor Society, and have been a lead in production elements such as makeup (or sometimes sound and props) for shows like Little Shop of Horrors, She Kills Monsters, and Shrek. Moreover, I have acted in shows like The Tempest and Honk!. I have also participated in annual festivals such as Fringe in directorial and acting capacities. Outside of school, I have been the lead of sound for the musical Perfect Persona. Being a part of these productions has given me insight into the world of theatre, and I am keen on sharing my perspective to foster more understanding in the subject.

Photography Director
Hey everyone, I'm Lele and I'm a rising junior serving as the Photography Director for this journal. Most of my time in the arts goes into documentary and street photography. I also serve as Producer for Media Council, where I oversee our Photography and Video( AKA SASTV),committees after two years shooting on the Photography Committee myself. My main body of work is a project photographing the crews who build sets and run productions in Hengdian, which is where my family's background in film and TV first got me interested in visual storytelling. That series was named one of eight finalists in The New York Times Local Lens competition out of more than a thousand entries, and I also placed third in photo illustration at Quill and Scroll. I'm excited to help build a space where student work actually gets seen.

Hi! I’m Celeste, a soon-to-be senior and film director of the SASPX Arts Journal. This will be my third year taking a film course in SAS, and I’ve taken part in competitions like the Shanghai Student Film Festival and Clash of the Titans in Paris. I’m a part of the Media Council, along with Keepsakes, a youth-led initiative in Singapore thats dedicated to honoring the wisdom of the elderly by capturing their stories for future generations. My hobbies include reading, writing, directing, watching house tours, and listening to music (I’m surprised I haven’t gone deaf yet from wearing my headphones so much). I constantly find myself falling down rabbit holes on researching about how they come together to create art on a grander scale, and I hope to inspire you to do the same through this journal!

Film Director
Hellooo! I'm Chloe, a rising senior and a Film Director for this journal's Visual Arts Division. Around school, you'll probably find me editing, filming, listening to music, or watching analysis videos of film and music. My film experience includes events like Clash of the Titans in Paris and the Shanghai Student Film Festival. Other than competitions, I take part in Media Council’s SASTV and edit for Keepsakes, a Singaporean-based youth-led initiative preserving elderly stories through video interviews. On stage, I've performed as part of the main cast in multiple plays. If you can’t tell, I am a melomaniac (aka a total music nerd). So, I'm constantly fascinated by how sound and visuals come together. If I'm not editing, chances are I'm at a concert, a cinema, or a live theatre show. Through this journal, I hope to spark curiosity and help others fall more in love with the different arts together!

Hi, my name is Lizzy, and I'm a rising sophomore. I am interested in exploring all forms of art, primarily the visual. I am a member of NAHS and AC Design and Sales. Outside of school, I dedicate my time to creating art with a variety of mediums, my preferred being colored pencil and oil paint. Outside school, I attend art classes and regularly visit museums to seek inspiration. This summer, I was studying at the Rhode Island School of Design to strengthen my artistic skills.
